Utiliziation of Biofeedback:
Victims of abuse live extremely stressful lives. By utilizing biofeedback you can learn how to manage the effects of stress on your body. You can learn to slow your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and slow your breathing. The effects of stress on your health are well documented. But, also by managing the effects of stress you are better able to manage irritability, impatience, and anger. It will improve your mental and physical health. It will also give you the ability to make better decisions when in the face of fear…often a critical decision in your life!
According to the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, Inc: “Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. Precise instruments measure physiological activity such as brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments rapidly and accurately “feedback” information to the user. The presentation of this information — often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior — supports desired physiological changes. Over time, these changes can endure without continued use of an instrument.”
Biofeedback teaches awareness of what is happening in your body. It also teaches profound relaxation skills and ways to manage anxiety, and ways to recognize, reduce, and control stress responses. A healthier physiological state, can help remove the brain fog that anxiety can cause. Removing the feelings of fear and panic can help you to respond to situations rationally. It can help you to make clear headed decisions. Biofeedback promotes the relaxation response as well as training the individual to adapt to better means of coping.
It has been found to be very useful for addicts to manage trigger detection, manage stress hormones and reduce anxiety thereby reducing stress-related cravings.
